Obituary for William Boardman

In loving memory of William “Bill” Boardman who passed away on May 18, 2018 in Pleasant Hill. Bill was a resident of San Ramon but relocated to a memory care facility in Pleasant Hill in March 2018. His passing followed a very sudden diagnosis, and a short, yet valiant, battle with dementia.

Bill was born in Fargo, North Dakota on July 3, 1942 and moved with his family to California in 1949, first residing in San Francisco for several years, then later moving to Sacramento, then finally settling in Lafayette in 1958. Bill was predeceased by sister JoAnn Moseley, brother Bob Boardman, and parents George and Frances Boardman. Bill is survived by his daughter Dana Boardman of Lafayette; sister Mary Lou Gard of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces Barb Erickson, Sue Emert, and Deb Hansen; and nephews Mike Gard, Jesse Boardman, Ian Boardman, and Robb Boardman; partner Pam Fowler of Roseville; and ex-wife Lynn Boardman of Lafayette.

Bill graduated from Acalanes High School in Lafayette in 1960. He served in the Naval Air Reserve from 1964 to 1972. He graduated from California State University, East Bay with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1981 and a Masters of Business Administration from St. Mary’s College in 1984. He worked for the State of Equalization as an Auditor, an Accountant for the Contra Costa County Office of Education and was Director of Business Services for the San Lorenzo Unified School District for 23 years. After his retirement in 2008, he worked as a budget consultant for the Alameda County Office of Education.

Bill loved bike riding, windsurfing, roller-skating, weight lifting, and walking on the Iron Horse Trail near his home in San Ramon. He was an outstanding water skier in his younger years, and he and his friends would spend most weekends waterskiing at Lake Berryessa. He loved cars all his life, working on his 1957 Chevy and his beloved 1965 Austin Healey in his younger years, and never missing a local auto show. He loved music, especially rock & roll and country, and attended many concerts throughout the years. He loved to travel, taking day trips to Marin County and Half Moon Bay, and longer trips to Maui, his favorite vacation destination. He was also an avid San Francisco Giants fan and loved taking the ferry to baseball games at AT&T Park.

Bill was a wonderful father, a true gentleman, kind to all, and loved making people laugh. He was always positive about life and striving to be physically fit. He lived life to the fullest and looked at everything as an adventure. We will miss his positive presence, but know he is now at peace in a better place.

A memorial service will be held for Bill, followed by a reception on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church located at 49 Knox Drive in Lafayette.
