Obituary for Virginia Dunn

About a week after celebrating Christmas with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Mary Virginia Dunn (Mitchell), 97, passed away peacefully at home.

Virginia was born January 23, 1920 in Sioux City, Iowa to Anthony “Tony” Mitchell and Blanche Lewis. Raised in Sioux City, she lived in California for most of her adult life.

Born in the year women received the right to vote, she never missed an election. Part of the “greatest generation” Virginia lived through The Depression and served in the United States Treasury Department during WWII.

She graduated from Cathedral High School and Clarke College with a B.A. degree focusing on library science and social work. A talented ballerina, she was accepted at age 18 by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. She was an avid reader and enjoyed mysteries. After raising her family, she worked for many years at Macy’s.
Virginia was a devoted mother, the role she cherished most. She had 5 children, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren (with twins on the way).

Virginia is survived by her children, Jennifer Sparacino (Tom), Tony Finkas (Susan), Debbie Winning (Gary), Mary Finkas (Jan), and Ed Finkas; her grandchildren, Bricken Sparacino (Michael Birch), Kip Winning (Kathy), Maegan Pearson (John), Kyle Winning (Joanna), Ryan Finkas (Linda), Kirsten Finkas (Neil Gregor), Lindsay Finkas (Nick Harvey), and Kevin Finkas (Christine); great-grandchildren, Max Winning, Ben Winning, Ford Pearson, Hudson Pearson, Dylan Winning, Nathan Winning, Jasmine Virginia Winning, Olivia Finkas, Colin Finkas, Aubrey Gregor, Everett Gregor, and Sophia Finkas; and her feisty Chihuahua companion, Buddy. She was predeceased by her brother James Mitchell, cousin Edward Mitchell, and former husbands, Ralph Finkas and Justin Dunn.

Thank you to her loving caregivers Kathy Singh and Ramona Amato.

Virginia was an intelligent, beautiful, gracious, and dearly loved person who will be missed by all who knew her.

The family will hold private services. Donations can be made to local food banks in her memory.
