Obituary for Tony D. Watkin

Born in Calgary Alberta, Tony grew up in nearby Turner Valley where he enjoyed playing ice hockey on frozen lakes with his friends. Tony came to the United States to attend Rice University in Houston, where he played on the baseball and golf teams and obtained a degree in mechanical engineering. That is where he met the love of his life Dorothy (Draper), who he was married to for the next 60 years. He then attended the University of Texas at Austin, earning an additional degree in aeronautical engineering. Tony accepted a job as an engineer with Daniel Industries, became an American citizen, and the couple started a family in Houston with 3 children. Tony then accepted a transfer out to California where his love for the outdoors flourished and the family settled down in Martinez for the next 25 years. As empty nesters, they moved to Danville where they were golf and tennis members of Crow Canyon Country Club, before moving to Rossmoor in 2008. Tony was the ultimate outdoorsman, who enjoyed a variety of activities which included golf, tennis, hiking, softball, skiing, cycling and attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He was a fan of all Bay Area sports teams. His real passion was mountain climbing, and he traveled all over the world seeking out climbing challenges. He participated in climbing expeditions in Nepal, China, and Bolivia, among others. He knew just about every inch of the Sierras as well as the Canadian Rockies, Yosemite and Mt. Diablo, and had climbed the highest 100 peaks in the state of California. He was proceeded in death by his parents Walter and Gertrude Watkin, and his son Wayne. Tony is survived by his wife Dorothy; daughter Julie (Robert) Morbidelli of Alameda, their children Rachel, Olivia, Catrina and Dominic; son Steve (Julie) Watkin of San Ramon, and their children Elizabeth, Brian and Katie; sister Jill Denison of Vancouver, BC, and her children Michael, Chris and Jennifer and their families. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life on Tuesday, September 12th at 5:00 at the Stanley Dollar Clubhouse in Rossmoor, 1015 Stanley Dollar Drive.
