Obituary for Thomas Tos

Thomas Eugene Tos was born in Hanford, California on June 15, 1940 to Leo & Grace Tos, the second of three sons. Tom graduated from Hanford High School and Oregon State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. He married Lynn Dryfhout on August 18, 1961 with whom he had three children. After graduation, they moved to Pleasant Hill, CA where Tom managed the pharmacy at Payless Drug Store. After two years at Payless, Tom bought Highland Pharmacy in Walnut Creek, CA where he owned and operated until semi-retirement in 2005. With a passion for helping others, Tom continued working part time for Hospice of the East Bay and finally Script Works Pharmacy until his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer in 2014. Tom was a deacon and elder for many years in the Walnut Creek Christian Reformed Church. Valuing the importance of a Christian education, he helped start Ygnacio Valley Christian School in 1972 and Contra Costa Christian High School in 1979. He served on the respective school boards for many years. Tom enjoyed Bible Study, snow skiing, water skiing, softball, travel, and being with his children and grandchildren. Tom passed away peacefully on February 28 with family members at his side. He is survived by his wife Lynn, his children Cheryl (Doug Elffers), Rod (Karen Jongsma), and Laura (Bas De Jong), nine grandchildren, and brother Bob (Jane Tos). A memorial service will be held March 17, 2018 at First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley (2407 Dana St.) at 1:00 pm.
