Obituary for Susan Humphrey

Beloved wife, mother, sister and friend Sue passed away peacefully with her family at her side after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. Through it all, she was a woman of determination, grace and a pillar of strength to many.

Susan was born to Glen and Eleanor ‘Pat’ J. Rusk, in Burlingame, CA and ultimately raised in Walnut Creek where she attended Walnut Creek Elementary and Las Lomas High School. Following high school, Sue attended San Francisco State University and Diablo Valley College. While attending DVC, Sue met Dave and they were married in Danville on July 1, 1961.

Sue and Dave moved around California following construction projects, returning to the San Ramon Valley in 1964 to settle down as a young family. After the birth of son Scott and daughter Heidi, Sue volunteered and taught extra-curricular activity classes at the Walt Disney Elementary School for several years. Sue was very involved with various school and sports programs for both Scott and Heidi and also made time for her own custom Stained Glass work starting her own business in 1968. She continued her artistic and creative ways which saw a number of her projects proudly displayed in windows and in front door entries of local homes and schools. One of her largest stained-glass projects was for Beringer Vineyards in St. Helena, CA.

In 1979, Sue and Dave started DHE. Inc. specializing in Concrete Batching equipment. As co-owner and CFO of DHE, Inc., Sue was responsible for all administrative duties. Sue also started a Woman Owned Business (WOB) known as Con Agg Machine & Iron, to serve the construction industry. Sue retired in 2010 after 31 years and turned over her duties to daughter Heidi, so she could further enjoy her other passions that included being a grandmother, boating and gardening. She was an avid gardener who had a unique touch in which she could envision a beautiful and vibrant garden from an empty yard. Sue was an active member of the Walnut Creek Garden Club.

Sue enjoyed several decades of boating with Dave, which took them to many destinations on the west coast. Countless friends and family members enjoyed their time with Sue on the water, unique destinations which included memorable events, lengthy Scrabble games and terrific sunsets with loved ones.

Family and friends were first and foremost in Sue’s mind. She always wanted to do more for her family. Sue had an exceptional aptitude for making everyone feel special and appreciated. She took a keen interest in their needs and passions and helped inspire others to be their best and was always by their side regardless of the situation for support.

Sue is survived by her husband Dave Humphrey of 56 years; son Scott (Kathleen) Humphrey; daughter Heidi (Rich) Herbert; brothers Robert (Marilyn) Rusk and Alonzo Rusk; and her special loves, her five grandchildren, Kaitlyn Humphrey, Chelsea Herbert, Tom Humphrey, Lindsey Herbert and Michael Humphrey.

Her younger sister Elizabeth Rusk preceded Susan in death.

Her gracious and kind spirit will be dearly missed.

A celebration of Sue’s life will be held at Community Presbyterian Church, 222 W El Pintado, in Danville, on Saturday Nov. 25, 2017 at 10:30 AM. A reception will follow her celebration of life, at Sue & Dave’s residence; in and about Sue’s garden, which she enjoyed so much.

The family would like to extend their personal thanks to the many friends and medical staff for their kind words and care over the past several years.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations, in Susan’s memory, to the Bruns House – Hospice of the East Bay, 3470 Buskirk Ave., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523, and/or a charity of your choice.
