Obituary for Patricia Riggs

Patricia passed away peacefully in her sleep in Lafayette, California, her home for the past 54 years. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Louis William Riggs. She is survived by her daughter Katherine Stimson (John) and her son James Riggs (Tina). She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Patrick Stimson, Sarah Vogler (Michael), and Georgia and Rosemary Riggs. She also leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Rose and Brooks Louis Vogler. In addition, Patricia is survived by her five nieces and their families, as well as by many loving friends. All of us will treasure her memory.

Patricia was born in Galesburg, Illinois to Harold and Georgia McPherrin. The family moved to Riverside, California when she was an infant. Patricia grew up in Riverside, and met her husband Louis there. After their marriage in 1946, Patricia and Louis moved to Berkeley so Louis could finish his college education after serving in the military during World War II.

Patricia and Louis had a wonderful 56 year marriage. They both enjoyed traveling the world, playing golf, and especially spending time with their friends and family. Patricia was the consummate hostess to numerous fantastic parties. Her cooking skills are legendary, as well as her charm and infectious laugh. She was always the life of the party!

Patricia was a gifted artist, and her sense of color and design was flawless. Her gardens, which she loved and spent hours working on, were delightful.

As one of her children wrote: She could paint herself into a picture, and plant herself into a garden.

Patricia found time to volunteer in various areas, including the Coral Branch of Children's Hospital and the Junior Center of Art and Science (The Doolittles), both in Oakland.

For several years she was a docent at the Oakland Museum. She was a longtime member of the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church and the Orinda Country Club. One of her proudest accomplishments was as a part of the design committee for the Lafayette City Seal. Patricia enjoyed a good game of dominos (she usually won) and a stimulating game of bridge.

Above all else in Patricia's life was her love for her family. She took joy in our successes and was there when we needed her to support us. Her happiness in and love for her grandchildren was immense. Thank you Mom, we will miss you.

Private family services will be held. Should you care to remember her by a donation, she was an ardent supporter of the St. Mary's College Museum of Art. PMB 5110, Moraga, CA 94575.
