Obituary for Norma Giulieri

It is with great sadness our dear Mother, Norma Giulieri, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017. She had been in declining health over the last few years and is now at peace. Norma was born on July 24, 1921 in Eureka, CA as the only child to devoted parents John and Mary Kinkela. Norma’s parents instilled values of determination, compassion and the importance of an education. As a young girl she learned to play piano, sing and was also bilingual speaking English and Croatian.

After high school Norma attended Humboldt State University graduating with a degree in education and receiving her teaching credential. But it wasn’t all about school, there she met the love of her life Elmo who was also getting his degree in education. Upon their graduation, they moved to Benicia, CA where Norma began her teaching career and Elmo fulfilled his military commitment in the Marines. Later they moved to Walnut Creek and built their family home of 66 years. Norma left teaching to raise her daughter’s Kathy and Nancy and support her husband as he worked on his doctorate degree at the University of California at Berkeley. Norma later taught for the Moraga School District. As a dedicated teacher she adored her students and many remained in touch with her throughout the years. After retirement she became the best Gams to her grandchildren, becoming fully involved in their care and extracurricular activities. She was also Girl State Chairmen through the American Legion coordinating with local high schools giving girls the opportunity to learn about state government. Music was a part of her life listening to all types of genres, especially Frank Sinatra. She was a 49er faithful attending games until the age of 92. Joe Montana remained her favorite player of all time. You could also find Norma reading a good book or working in the garden, but she was always ready to help the family when needed.

Norma was predeceased by her loving husband Elmo of 55 years. She will be dearly missed by her daughters Kathy Nipkow (Robert), Nancy Thomas (Lonn), grandchildren Kelly Killingsworth (Ross), Calisse Nipkow, and Sean Thomas. Also, leaving behind great grandchildren Danica, Shelby, Maci and Jordyn. In addition, Norma leaves behind sister in law Jane Giulieri, her nieces Lorna, Liane and their spouses. She will also be missed by her childhood chum of 85 years Zelma Pezzotti and her long-time friend Anna Rios.

We would like to thank our caregivers Elvie Gupaz, Anne and Glenn Santos and all the caregivers of Alamo Residence House for their special care over the last year. The family thanks Hospice of the East Bay for providing continued support and guidance.

Services will be held in Eureka, CA at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in late December. Donations may be made to Hospice of the East Bay or a charity of your choice.
