Obituary for Nicholas Fleming

Nicholas Alan Fleming of Walnut Creek, California passed away on December 22, 2017. He was 57 years old.

Nicholas, or Nick as he was known to some, was born in Portland, Oregon on April 8, 1960 to John and Catherine (Adams) Fleming of Portland. He was the youngest of six children. His family moved to Tigard, Oregon when he was quite young and he spent his early years there. He graduated from Tigard Senior High in the class of 1978.

Nicholas was always, it seemed, surrounded by his beloved cats, his extended family, and innumerable friends. His parents and four older siblings, John, Judy Fry, Robert, and Mary Patricia Biederman predeceased him. Daniel is his only living sibling. In addition, he leaves behind his cat Monte and fourteen nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.

He worked in sales his entire life, specifically in the area of industrial automation. At the time of his death Kaman Automation employed him in the capacity of District Sales Manager. Over the years his career placed him across the US in Portland, Seattle, Virginia, North Carolina, Salt Lake City, Southern and Northern California.

Outside of work, Nicholas invested himself in the San Francisco Elks Lodge and most recently the Walnut Creek chapter. He naturally gravitated to positions of leadership and to no one’s surprise in 2014 was elected to the Lodge’s highest post of Exalted Ruler. The Elk services to young and old in the community and in their Lodge brought Nick great joy; one highlight for him was a gift fundraiser held every year where they would wrap and deliver Christmas packages to less fortunate children. The Elks missions aligned perfectly with his caring, generous nature and his patriotic commitment.

Nicholas’ passion for cooking and baking was legendary. And he was very good at it. He loved to entertain his family and friends and did so frequently, often in high style. Mealtime conversation could include politics, his favorite 49ers, the Golden State warriors, or Nascar.

The world has lost, much too soon, an incredible uncle, brother, and friend. We have been blessed by his touch and are the better for it.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service at St. John Vianney Church on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 10:30am.

In lieu of flowers, Nick would be best honored by a donation made to The Elks National Foundation in care of the Elks Lodge Walnut Creek No. 1811, 1475 Creekside Dr., Walnut Creek, CA 94596-5620 (P: 925-935-1811).
