Obituary for Maitland Dimock

Maitland (Mait) Stuart Dimock passed away peacefully in his home on January 9, 2018, after a prolonged illness. He and his wife, Debbie, are residents of both Orinda and Sacramento, California.

Maitland was born on August 30, 1940 in Berkeley, California to Annette McElhinney and George Dimock. He attended high school in Ithaca, New York and graduated from Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. Maitland served in the U.S. Army National Guard.

In 1970 he married Deborah Braatz in Montecito, CA. As he himself was quick to note, she was his one and only wife.

Maitland began his professional career at CNA Insurance in Los Angeles. He later founded Dimock & Associates in San Francisco, specializing in liability insurance and working closely with Lloyds of London. Always a fan of English history and culture, Maitland enjoyed many business trips to London throughout his career.

Here are some things you should know about Mait:

He was passionate about travel. He loved exploring European destinations such as Italy, Russia and France. He enjoyed skiing, especially in Sun Valley, Idaho, as well as vacationing in Hawaii’s Kona Village.

He was an enthusiastic wine aficionado, touring vineyards, near and far, and was known to especially relish a well-aged glass of Cabernet Sauvignon.

He loved music. Having grown up in the Presbyterian Church where he was a choir soloist, music and singing were always a part of his life. He frequently sang with his grandchildren, much to their delight. His deep baritone voice was a joy to hear.

He was generous and community minded. One of his favorite charitable organizations was Amigos de las Americas. Both of his daughters participated in this program, and he served on their board for many years. After hurricane Katrina he went on three mission trips with the Presbyterian Church, helping rebuild homes along the Louisiana Coast.

After retiring, Mait shared his business expertise and passion for fitness, investing time and energy at Orinda’s InForma, where he was a much-loved advisor to the owner and members, and an early morning fixture, greeting people with a smile and a song.

One of his greatest disappointments in life was that he never had the pleasure of owning a dog.

Finally, he was a wonderful father, husband, grandparent, brother and friend.

Maitland is survived by his loving wife, Debbie, to whom he was married for 47 years. He was predeceased by his beloved eldest daughter, Jeanette Elizabeth, in 1995. He leaves behind his younger daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Eli Groppo, of Sacramento. They have two young children, Madeline Jeanette and Sullivan Maitland. He is also survived by his sister, Beverly Craig, of Thousand Oaks, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church on Thursday, January 25th at 2:00. A reception follows at the Orinda Country Club.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Amigos de las Americas, East Bay Chapter.
