Obituary for John Gilbert

John I. Gilbert (Jack) peacefully passed away on January 26th, 2018 at the age of 80. John was born on March 23, 1937 in Fargo, North Dakota; to the family of Lloyd and Delia Gilbert and sisters Jane and Nancy. Jack is survived by his wife of 55 years Beverly, his sons Matt and Greg and grandchildren Sean, Samantha, Sophia and Sarah.

Jack graduated from Fargo High School. He then received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Dakota and went on to attend dental school at the University of Minnesota earning his Doctorate of Dental Science in 1962. During his time at the University he would meet and marry his wife Beverly.

Jack enlisted in the army following dental school and would achieve the rank of Major. While serving he was stationed in Paris, France where he and Beverly would start their family. His time in Europe sparked a lifelong passion for travel, photography and automobiles. "Jack and Bev" took every opportunity to explore the continent, attending and photographing many of the iconic auto races from Monte Carlo to Lemans. Jack leaves behind a wonderful collection of photography documenting a golden era of auto racing. His passion for cars and travel would remain a part of his life and he would pass that passion on to his family.

Following his years in France Jack moved to California with his wife Beverly and son Matthew to attend the Oral Surgery Residency program at Highland Hospital in Oakland. Jack completed his residency in 1971. Highland hospital would remain a big part of his life, later returning to be the acting Director of the Oral Surgery Residency program. He cherished his time there and loved working with the young residents. While living in Oakland Jack and Beverly had their second son Greg.

The family would move to Diablo, Ca. where they would reside for the next 45 years. Jack joined a small Oral Surgery practice in Walnut Creek and Antioch and would become a fixture in the dental community for decades. Jack absolutely loved his work and his career lasted 44 years.

Jack was an "outdoorsman" at heart. At an early age he shared a love for hunting with his father. He later became an avid skier and tennis player and would share those passions with his sons. Jack passed along his love and knowledge through teaching and instructing.
