Obituary for Joan Marable

Joan Marable died peacefully at her home in Moraga on September 28, 2017.

Born in Oakland, to Gordon and Ynez Frazell, she lived in Alameda before moving to Moraga in 1952 where her father had purchased a ranch. She was mending fences and branding cattle from an early age. A graduate of Acalanes High School, she attended U.C. Berkeley where she was an art history and design major and a member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. After graduation, she worked as an interior designer for Breuner’s Department Store in Oakland and also as a free lance designer. She designed and built a modified New Mexico pueblo style home in Moraga in 2005. Joan was exposed to music and ballet as a child and continued her interest in dance while at U.C. She first entered teaching as a Head Start volunteer in Oakland and later taught in parochial schools in San Leandro and the Midwest. When the Lafayette Arts and Science Foundation, now Lafayette Partners in Education, was founded, Joan was one of several art teachers hired and helped design the art program. Joan had previously volunteered to teach art in her daughter’s third grade classroom and also developed an after school arts program at Burton Valley School integrating art practice and art history. Her unique approach was integrated into LASF. Joan also created a series of classes focusing on famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder. In 2011 the Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa County awarded her an Arts Recognition Award for her innovative art teaching for children. Joan believed that while not all children will become artists, they can learn to appreciate beauty and apply creative solutions to some of life’s challenges.

Joan is survived by Darwin, her husband, Theresa, her daughter, Susan Sperry, sister, Samuel Sperry, brother-in-law, Cristina Polk and Serina Culleton, nieces, Kevin Polk and Timothy Culleton, nephews, Max Polk, Ellis and Ford Culleton grand nephews and Megan Polk, grand niece, and numerous cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held on October 11 from 5-9pm at Hull’s Mortuary, 1139 Saranap Avenue, Walnut Creek. Funeral services are scheduled for October 12 at 11am at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 66 St. Stephen’s Drive, Orinda.
