Obituary for Fernando Pettis

Fernando was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the eldest of four children. He is survived by his wife Angela, his two daughters Jennifer and Grace, and five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Growing up Fernando and his family were fortunate to travel in Europe and the United States. He met the love of his life, Angela, In Buenos Aires in the elevator of the apartment building they both lived in. After graduating from the Otto Krause Technical School in Buenos Aires, Fernando attended college in Mississippi. At that time Angela was working in California. He joined her there and they were married in Oakland, CA on October 20, 1956.

Fernando worked in San Francisco. Angela can remember taking the train under the Bay Bridge to meet him there on Fridays to have dinner.

Jennifer came along in 1958 and Grace in 1961. They missed their Argentine family so decided to move back to Argentina. They settled in Cordoba where Fernando worked for TRW designing valves. Four years later they decided to move back to California and subsequently stayed there for the next 40 years. During this time Fernando worked as a Facilities Engineer at International Harvester and Solar Turbines in San Diego.

In 2005 Fernando and Angela decided to retire to beautiful Bariloche, Argentina, the location of a world renowned ski resort. Fernando built his dream workshop there and immersed himself with the Bariloche Model Airplane Club. Unfortunately, winters were a bit too cold for Angela and once again they moved back to the USA. Surrounded by their children and grandchildren, Fernando and Angela once again took up residence in the Bay Area.

Throughout his life, Fernando was passionate about building all things small, model airplanes, sail boats and HO scale trains. He loved carpentry and hand built many beautiful pieces of furniture - including tiny furniture for his granddaughter’s dollhouse. He was also an avid reader and loved to discuss many subjects, especially politics.

After a very short battle with heart stress, Fernando passed away in his sleep. He was 87 years old. He will be sorely missed.
