Obituary for Edna Schaffer

Edna Erle Schaffer, 97, died on the morning of Friday, June 1, 2018 at her home in Walnut Creek, CA. Edna Erle was born to Leo Henry Hering and Lena Sophie Hering (nèe Bosse) on their farm in Kirk, TX. Edna Erle grew up on her family’s un-electrified farm and rode to her one-room schoolhouse seated behind her big sister, Leona, on their pacing horse, Black Betty. She taught herself to play piano and led her church choir with her lovely voice. She graduated from Scott & White Nursing School and received her R.N. license in November of 1941. Edna Erle served in the U. S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII, working as a Nurse Anesthetist in stateside military hospitals, including Sheppard Field, Jefferson Barracks, and Schick Hospital. It was during her post at Sheppard Air Field in Wichita Falls, TX that 1stLt Hering met her husband, SSgt Stanley Conrad Schaffer of Kingsburg, CA. Edna Erle and Stan married in 1942, moved to the East Bay Area in 1949, and to Walnut Creek in 1953, where they developed and ran clinical labs, including Schaffer Laboratories. She retired in 1996 at age 76. Edna Erle lived a very active and independent life into her 90s, traveling frequently to visit far-flung family and friends and helping care for ailing friends. Her greatest joy was spending time with her sons and their families. She was energetic, thoughtful, kind and generous, and will be deeply missed. Edna Erle was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Leona Urbantke (nèe Hering), her eldest son, Eric Conrad Schaffer, and her husband of 45 years, Stanley Conrad Schaffer. She is survived by her son Charles H. Schaffer and wife Britt of Austin, TX; her daughter-in-law Carolyn Schaffer of Alamo, CA; grandson Eric C. Schaffer and wife Stacie of Lafayette, CA; granddaughter Mary Beth Maddox and husband Brian of Walnut Creek; grandson Leo H. Schaffer; great granddaughters Kayla, Gabby and Emily Schaffer, and Natalie Maddox; and her loving caregiver, Dali Suskovic. Edna Erle’s life was celebrated at a private burial at Kingsburg Cemetery.
