Obituary for Charles Roberts

On May 23rd, Charles became free from a body that no longer served him. He was a loving husband, father, and friend. Born in San Francisco, he was raised by Carmen, a loving, hard-working single mother, in the South of Market neighborhood. He graduated from John O’Connell High School, attended City College, and received a degree from the California Culinary Academy. Professionally, Charlie the Butcher was known as skilled meat cutter and passionate epicurean. Anyone who knew him was treated to his culinary delights, and he saw no difference between cooking for family and cooking for customers. He loved to camp, particularly with his family, and was especially fond of boating in California’s many freshwater lakes. Boating provided Charles with some well-earned peace and quiet from the bustle of everyday life. He would spend hours on the water in his boat, playing with countless homemade contraptions by day, and drifting to sleep under the stars by night. But perhaps more than anything, he was known for his tireless sense of humor. In the gloomiest moments, his acquaintances were never more than a few minutes away from a story or joke that culminated in a long, hearty, laugh that could be heard for miles.

His fight with cancer was just one in a long list of obstacles Charles faced in life. And he fought hard, of course, because that was his way. Though the cancer managed to claim his physical health, the illness brought his entire family close together over the past year. That is a gift, and in that way, he certainly won his fight. Through brain surgery, multiple chemotherapy treatments, and the general stress of being unwell, he remained committed to living a full, meaningful life and spent virtually all his time with family. He even got to take his dream vacation in Hawaii. He made the most of his final days, and he would not want anyone to feel bad about that. He passed peacefully, surrounded by family.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by Pauline, his wife of 42 years; Erica and Greg, his children; Maddie, Andrew, and Dylan, his grandchildren; Jim and Linda, his brother and sister; Crystal, his niece; David, his best friend’s son; and Blackie, his cat. He joins Carmen, his mom, and Alfonso, his best friend, in heaven.
