Obituary for Beatrice Whiteside

Bee Whiteside, long time resident of Lafayette, CA, passed away April 23rd in her home surrounded by family.

Born in Warren, PA, the eldest daughter of Clarence and Mayme Gauthier, Bee grew up in Grand Rapids MI with her 4 sisters and 2 brothers. A beautiful, young woman, Bee enjoyed a rich social life with many suitors until Sam Whiteside, a successful businessman and University of Chicago football star, swept her off her feet. They married in 1948 and settled in CA, raising 6 children. Bee is survived by her children Sam (Laurie), Tom, Mo (Kate), Susan, Anne (Dave Parker) and Stephen (Alethea) along with 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Bee was preceded in death by her loving husband Samuel Porter Whiteside in 1993.

Always active in the Lafayette community and with her church, St. Perpetua, Bee was a constant volunteer. She was so darn good at making things happen and getting jobs done that her leadership abilities were always in demand. She was accomplished and confident with remarkable boldness and determination.

Among Bee's many interests were cooking, gardening, entertaining and bowling, but playing bridge with girlfriends was her favorite - especially the weekends in Aptos! She played in many groups, always willing to substitute to make a foursome. Later in life as an avid Giants fan, spring training became an annual event. A great day was playing bridge with girlfriends while tailgating in the parking lot at Candlestick before the game.

Family was most important to Bee. She truly was the matriarch, extending love and home to family and friends. A Thanksgiving gathering of 30 or more was not uncommon because all were welcome and happily fed and entertained. Trips back to Grand Rapids for Gauthier reunions were treasured times.

Bee’s incredible energy, warmth, and genuineness will always be remembered and missed the most. A celebration of Bee’s life will be held over the summer.
